aliansi jurnalis independen (aji)The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) plays a key role in promoting investigative journalism in Indonesia. Founded in 1994 and based in Jakarta, AJI was the first independent journalists association in Indonesia. Its inception was triggered by the dictatorial regime of Soeharto, which banned several courageous investigative journalism publications, including Tempo Magazine. AJI also provides legal support when independent journalists are sued or harassed because of their attacking activities.

press councilThe Press council helps press organizations in formulating regulations in the field of the press and to improve the quality of journalistic profession. The Press Council was first established in 1968 based on Law No. 11 Year 1966 on the Press Principal Provisions signed by President Soekarno on December 12, 1966. The function of the independent Press Council is no longer as a government adviser but to protect of the freedom of the press. Structural relationship between the Press Council and the government was eliminated, and was highlighted by the dissolution of the Ministry of Information by President Abdurrahman Wahid in 1999.

Their mission: CPJ promotes press freedom worldwide and defends the right of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal. CPJ ensures the free flow of news and commentary by taking action wherever journalists are attacked, imprisoned, killed, kidnapped, threatened, censored, or harassed. CPJ is made up of about 40 experts around the world, with headquarters in New York City. When press freedom violations occur, CPJ mobilizes a network of correspondents who report and take action on behalf of those targeted. CPJ reports on violations in repressive countries, conflict zones, and established democracies alike. A board of prominent journalists from around the world helps guide CPJ's activities. |
